Primary Rooms

Compassion. Community. Independence.

These are the hallmarks of the Primary years at Freehold Montessori, when children become increasingly capable and responsible members of their community.

Children are integrated into a mixed-aged classroom, with peers ranging between the ages from 3 to 6 years of age. Each class is thoughtfully balanced by age, gender and diversity. The 3 to 6 Montessori curriculum and the beautiful materials within this environment provide opportunities for exploration, critical thinking and problem-solving.

Primary: Ages 3-6

Our classrooms are beautiful, nurturing learning environments designed to respond to the most universal, natural drives and tendencies of three- to six-year-old children, including their:

  • ability to absorb customs, language and knowledge directly from their environment;

  • desire to learn by doing, moving, touching, manipulating and exploring

  • need for order and routine

  • drive to master and perfect the movements of their bodies

  • quest for independence

  • need to learn from concrete experience first before learning in the abstract

Two Primary Classrooms:

Our two Primary classrooms support children ages 3-6. Children need to be toilet trained to be enrolled into the class. Children of different abilities and backgrounds interact and learn from each other in a non-competitive environment. They are given freedom of choice in a controlled environment.

Ms. Margaret and Evie are Primary Certified Montessori Teachers. One classroom requires a full time enrollment (M-F, 9am-3pm) for this classroom. These scheduling options are implemented because regular attendance is important to the child, the environment and the class.  It enables the children to feel safe and relaxed in the classroom and aids them in forming strong bonds with their teachers and friends.  This also gives children the opportunity to actively pursue their unfolding interests.  Early childhood specialists agree that young children thrive in a secure, consistent environment with a steady routine.  Children adjust very well to this schedule and bond easily with their teachers and peers when they have at least four consecutive days in their community--their classroom.  It quickly becomes and remains a beloved and special place for them. The steady rhythm of coming to school helps create a positive attitude towards school.  It also gives children a strong feeling of belonging to their community that they help create, and of which they are valued and respected members.

Admissions and classroom placement decisions are based on many factors including gender, age, and a comfortable fit within a Montessori environment as dictated by the balance of the existing multi-age classroom.

Freehold Montessori does not discriminate on the basis of race or religion in the administration of its educational policies.

My son loves coming to school!

“At drop off, my son always runs into the classroom, ready to learn new things and can't wait to show me all his works that he finished by himself at the end of the week!"

— K.A.

The teachers are wonderful!

“My daughter has learned so much in the short amount of time that she has been at Freehold Montessori.  I'm so glad that we switched to this school from our previous day care!”

— B.K.

They are so kind and helpful!

“My son was having a very hard time transitioning since he was always home with me.  Ms. Yogi was so calm and compassionate at drop off.  Any time I would call to check up on him, Ms. Yogi always gave me a great feeling knowing that my son was ok and no longer crying and was actively engaged in the classroom.”
